Hoping to duck asking land owners for street millage, Hamilton Township Overseer Carl Druskovich will be heading to the Van Buren Road Agency to try to work out a contract.

The township, facing dwindling road subsidy, has held four municipal meetings on what to do regarding roads, prompting discussion about choices such as dropping dust control applications and extending the total of time between seal-coating of roads. “Nobody was in support of any of those ideas,” Druskovich said.

The township gets about $40,000 each year from the road committee, but has to match every $1 from the region with $3 in area backing, the administrator said. “We need to have a lower match from us,” Druskovich said.

The township board hopes to get the road commission to agree to a 50-50 split on funding projects.

The board also discussed the alternative of seeking voter support of a millage to subsidize road work. A levy of 1 mill, or $1 for every $1,000 of a property’s taxable value, would generate up to $65,000, according to the township.
