City services and employees are being choped back by assembly as to attain a 2.7 per cent tax increase for Salmon Arm people.
Facing a tax increase in the new year of virtually five per cent, Salmon Arm ruling body gave the 2010 municipality plan back to staff to find additional areas to cut. The consequential plan, discussed last Wednesday at a exclusive council assembly, includes a conscription slash of $151,590.
Town manager Carl Bannister translates that into a cutback in city employees.
Other than a cutback in staffing, city residents might be expecting to see a reduction in street services, as assembly decided to remove the following from the budget: $50,000 from the dust abatement program, reducing applications from two to one; and $43,700 or one-third of the funds for asphalt repair. Also, council slashed $6,000 for re-surfacing fire hall number one, and $3,000 for the city’s Japanese swap program. Other cuts suggested by employees included $32,000 for the spring wood-chipping program, Staff also suggested closing the SASCU Recreation Centre swimming pool on Sundays in May and June, when the facility is least used, for a saving of $3,000.
